Workshops for In-Service and Pre-Service Elementary School Teachers
Estuary Partnership teacher workshops focus on local ecosystems. Workshops help teachers develop investigation and inquiry techniques that can be completed in local natural areas. Individual workshops address specific themes, such as water quality, and, instructional strategies, such as service-learning. Teachers learn how to develop a unit that contains outdoor experiences, what to consider when taking students outside, how to conduct field work, and examples of pre- and post- field work activities that enhance field work and link it back to the classroom. Participants receive a notebook filled with activities that can be easily implemented in the classroom and complemented in the field. Activities are tied to Oregon state standards and Washington Essential Academic Learning Requirements and Grade Level Expectations.
We are offering a water quality workshop in early summer 2011. Details will follow. Contact Jennie Klein for information on upcoming workshops.
Agenda
Workshop participants spend time reviewing science concepts and practicing methods. Typically, at least half of the day is spent outdoors. Class and field activities are collaborative and appropriate for in-service or pre-service teachers with no to moderate experience implementing outdoor-focused science instruction.
Notes
Clock hours and Professional Development Units are available. College credit is available on a workshop to workshop basis. Workshops are free and limited to 12-20 participants.
The Estuary Partnership works with local and regional partners to deliver workshops that connect participants with existing resources in their communities. Past workshops, including Successful Schoolyard Science workshops, were presented by the Estuary Partnership with Portland Parks and Recreation and Columbia Slough Watershed Council.
